The Goddess Portraits

Nuit

T his series first began as an exploration of the nature of the Self, borne out of the concept that each individual is the physical embodiment of a divine universal force. Now it also stands as an affirmation of the strength of the human spirit. In various spiritual teachings throughout the world, humankind is considered a reflection of a Divine Force. We can only especulate, and we certainly love to do so. I've heard said that man was created in the image of God. Each painting began as a portrait of a real woman, and throughout the creative process emerged a diety, inspired by their individual traits and personalities and superimposed onto various Goddess mythologies. I decided to begin the series with the Divine Feminine because the strength and beauty of the women that surround me is worthy of honor. I believe that a part of the role of the artist in our society is to be a visual historian and I consider this series as much a conceptual project as a small historical record of these magnificent women, many of whom are New Orleans survivors. I present to you my personal account of the rise of the Goddess within our culture...

The Ink Meditations

"Creativity is an essential part of being human, a vital force without which we can exist, but not truly live... creativity [is] an ongoing flow within us and around us, to which we can all open if are willing to let down our guard...[To practice an art] is to explore the act of creation as a spiritual practice, as a way of awakening to our true nature and contacting the beauty and mystery of our lives." --Rudolf Steiner quoted in Art as a Spiritual Activity
