The Struggles With Subjectivity

"...the imagination must by long custom acquire the same method of thinking, and run along the parts of space and time in conceiving its objects. --Hume

Though the causes of any particular experience are objective and available to everyone, the experiences themselves are unique to each person experiencing them. We are united by events, but we are enduring the effects through our individual perceptions and reconciling those within the collective.

In exploring the concept of the subjective, I allude to the figure, allowing it to breathe emotion into the image through multiple layers. The process of creation becomes just as important as the final image. The properties of perception allow the viewer to discern the meaning by interpreting what is revealed and wondering about what is hidden. In Phenomenology of Spirit, Hegel explains how the subject is constituted by "the process of reflectively mediating itself with itself." I am seeking to flesh out that particular process by which the subject is constituted through the impressions left behind by each brush stroke.
