Maat represents the ideals of law, order, and truth. The word Maat translates to "that which is straight." Known as a Neter Goddess, she was also called the 'eye of Ra' or the 'daughter of Ra' by some mythological accounts. Although according to other writings, she is not consider a diety at all, and is simply described as the personified philosophical ideal of order and justice, but I?l let you be the judge. It was thought by Egyptians that if Maat didn't exist the universe would just revert to chaos. She sure seems to play an important part in the Egyptian Book of the Dead. It is in the Hall of Maat that the judgement of the dead is performed by weighing one's heart against Maat? feather on the scales.
Jaclyn Furlow picked Maat because she felt aligned to the pursuit of truth and social justice. She is an outspoken New Orleanian, involved in her community for the welfare of her city and its people.
